Contrary to earlier reports, I confirmed late in the day that iMovie will not be available for the first-generation iPad. My guess is that memory is the culprit: The iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch contain 512 MB of RAM, and the iPad 2 must contain at least that much. Apple is extremely reluctant to reveal how much RAM is in the iPad, despite the fact that we’ll learn that fact as soon as someone like iFixIt buys one of the first units and tears it apart.
This would be the most sense on whether or not it does have 512MB.
