nerdcast[5] Tony Trov & Johnny Zito

Tony Trov & Johnny Zito

Published May 26, 2010

Who are you and what do you do?

JZ - I’m John Zito and this is Tony Trov. We make web comics about tough girls and monsters for Zuda and Comixology.

TT - We just launched a studio of which; I am El Presidente and Zito is Space Admiral. Check out all of our comics at SouthFellini.com.

Who influenced you creatively to get you to this point?

JZ - Kurt Vonnegut and Hunter S. Thompson by way of Joseph Campbell and George Orwell’s love child. I also think P.T. Barnum had it going on.

TT - Harold Ramis, Chuck Barris and Sam Raimi. I think all three could make brilliant art in any medium they attack.

What would you like to change about your industry if you could?

JZ - I’d like to see cosplay go mainstream. Why aren’t capes common place outside comic book conventions? Comic book fans are being greedy by keeping all costume hijinx to themselves. We should get that out there, spread the gospel. Some days it just feels good to rock a domino mask and fedora.

TT - Free iPads and little American flags for everyone. The distribution of knowledge is growing monumentally and I believe the digital divide is getting smaller and smaller. Donate your old computers and books. Viva la tech.

What books are on your pull list?

JZ - Batman and Robin is the only monthly I’m following right now. I never miss a screen of Sheldon Vella’s SUPERtron. Everyone should bookmark Kate Beaton’s Hark a Vagrant. I’ve also been making my way through some old Ninja Turtles reprints I dug up.

TT - I’m not a weekly comic reader but currently I’m reading A Confederacy of Dunces. It will probably take me forever to get through it, so does that count?

What is your dream gig?

JZ - We have so many amazing ideas for Superman. The character is the essence of comic books, America, myth and faith. Adding to the legacy would be amazing.

TT - I’d love to write in the Jurassic Park universe. Maybe take everything off the island or have it take place underwater. Hmm gears turning…
