So Google Music Beta is official. The web app looks pretty slick, too.
What’s the difference between Amazon, Google, and Apple’s potential streaming service, though? Label support.
Amazon and Google have ventured forward without the support of the music labels and are allowing you to upload your music to their servers for streaming via the web and mobile devices. Great! Good for both companies to stick it to the labels and just make the services available for users. It seems like Music Beta won’t be letting in users all willy nilly, though, so we’ll have to wait to be able to upload 20,000 songs into the cloud. Darn..?
Apple is rumored to be in talks with labels about their own version of iTunes streaming and may even have their full support. What does that mean for you? For starters, it may mean you won’t have to wait a day and half uploading all of your music. Presumably, label support will mean that Apple’s servers can read over your library, and if it’s for sale in the iTunes store, that track will become instantly available to you for streaming - no upload necessary. (I wonder if this will rebrand Home Sharing as well, since that service is tracked via your Apple ID, too.)
I’m willing to bet a large majority of the folks reading this don’t pay for their music, or have ripped a ton of CDs to their HDD. If Apple has indeed gotten labels on their side, you won’t have to worry about uploading a single track to their servers. They already have just about every song out there available for purchase inside of iTunes for sale. Why bother having the user upload anything when they already have the track on hand? My bet is this will be the differentiator among the services. Your Apple ID will now know what files you have inside of iTunes and that info will then follow you around on all of your iOS devices and most likely a new web version of iTunes.
Besides, what’s magical about uploading 20,000 songs anywhere?
Contrary to earlier reports, I confirmed late in the day that iMovie will not be available for the first-generation iPad. My guess is that memory is the culprit: The iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch contain 512 MB of RAM, and the iPad 2 must contain at least that much. Apple is extremely reluctant to reveal how much RAM is in the iPad, despite the fact that we’ll learn that fact as soon as someone like iFixIt buys one of the first units and tears it apart.
This would be the most sense on whether or not it does have 512MB.
Every post I’m reading has had the RAM stats removed.
It’s not a total dealbreaker, but when running several apps in the tray it’s not a grand old party on that thing. Also, having Safari pages auto-refresh is fucking lame. You’d think that after a year there would at least be a modest RAM upgrade. Still no official word from Apple. Let’s go, iFixit.
“I prefer the Apple that makes its money by creating great, high-end, high-margin products and selling them directly to consumers. I am less fond of an Apple that makes money by striking or demanding dubious business deals. Forget my personal biases - I’m just saying, the former Apple would be interested in delivering stuff I will buy with my money and put in my pocket or my living room. The latter Apple would have more to gain by fleecing the supply and shoveling whatevers at me. You know who that reminds me of? Google. And I don’t like that.”Neven Mrgan’s tumbl: 30%
I’m so jacked for a new social network, you have no idea.
That was a joke.
If you were living under a rock which was covered with Android phones draped with western hipster plaid shirts, you missed that Apple unveiled a new social network based inside of iTunes. You can follow and be followed in order to discover new music. You can even create a circle of friends so you can see what you’re nerdy buddies are listening to, buying, and liking.
Dig concerts? You can follow your Lady Gaga and see where she is playing next. I don’t know about you, but I’m having with my stagnant selection of the Goo Goo Dolls and Third Eye Blind. Music doesn’t get any better than that, and you know it.
Inside of iOS 4.1, Ping works inside of the iTunes app, and it does indeed look slick. But, I have news for you, I don’t really “buy” my music. And as far as I can tell, Ping only scans for bought tunes.
I think there is a Housewives marathon on right now. I just pinged a little bit.
So an iPod touch w/ FaceTime, AppleTV announcement, iPad 4.2 beta SDK, and an updated iLife suite are my hopes.
If those don’t happen, I’m gonna be, like, so mad.
That was me, earlier in the week.. I was three-ish out for four, I guess. They showed off iOS 4.2 which would bring all of the iOS 4 goodies to your saddened, neglected operating system of the iPad. Thank your lucky stars, because I’m not sure if I want to live in a world without folders on my iPad.
The rumored iPod touches with Retina Displays were finally announced, and super thin, too. I guess the 3G radio for the iPhone 4 really does take up a lot of space. I surmise that because of the 3G radio, the iPhone 4 battery needs to be amped up that much more, too. But what about that back camera? The specs are listed as 960 x 720. Weak, no? It looks like the camera just takes video stills. How thicker would the touch have been if they included the iPhone 4’s still camera, I wonder?
The AppleTV was really a bummer, too. I say that because @Engadget’s “exclusives” talked about an App-ready version that was near release. So everyone got their collective Apple flesh lights out and started chugging away, myself included. An NHL app, a Bravo app, AH! So sad. I said on the Twitter shortly after that any dreams I had of a cable-free world were still that. Dreams. Some still think that the new AppleTV is running iOS behind the scenes, and it’s still possible for an SDK. I won’t hold my breath. I will continue to tighten my cheeks as I pay my Verizon bill every month.
Remember iLife?
Apple jerks across the east coast will no doubt be taking their breaks inside of their dark, depressing offices so that they can follow the live-blogs that will be uploading turtleneck infused pictures and text for the frothing masses.
Sure, you can include me in “the frothing masses”, but at least I can admit it. And so what if my frothing towel has my initials on it? Get over it, poindexter.
Rumors are once again swirling to tornado-like levels relating to just what Steve Jobs will announce in two days in California. So sit back, sip your overpriced Frappé, push todays Wall Street Journal aside, and close that SEO Webinar taking place on your sweet Toshiba ThinkPad. Here are my predictions/hopes.
To the tech nerds, like myself, that have an average of 400-500 new Google Reader items per day, it’s pretty much a given that Apple will unveil a new iPod touch with FaceTime capabilities. Sweet, right? FaceTime looks to be Apple’s new big thing in iOS and they will be pushing it pretty hard. You won’t even need an actual phone to contact other people on iPhones for video chat. The new beta of iOS 4.1 includes making FaceTime calls via phone numbers AND email addresses. Not only does that open things up for an iPod touch, but it looks to open things up for Mac OS X computers as well.
AppleTV is being heavily rumored to be getting an iOS upgrade, but would they do so at an Apple “music” event? The invitations that were send out were of a guitar without mention of anything else. It’s possible this could be Job’s, “one more thing” announcement at the very end. I’m hopeful for an iOS AppleTV with its own App Store. Though, if that’s the case, it would still be a long ways off as they would have to push out the beta SDK for such an item long before it would hit the masses. That would be the same reason I’m skeptical of the iPad getting iOS 4.1 any time soon. There has been no beta for the iPad in….forever?
And what about iLife? Apple has a suite of apps designed for digital creation ranging from creating your own website, DVDs, movies and also music. I’m going to guess that Garageband will be getting a significant update, maybe even an iOS app? Oh man, just the thought of recording a podcast on my iPad just made me spill my Frappé all over myself. At least, I hope that was my Frappé.
So an iPod touch w/ FaceTime, AppleTV announcement, iPad 4.2 beta SDK, and an updated iLife suite are my hopes.

This tweet from Arnold Kim got me thinking:
Most interesting about the FaceTime http://bit.ly/byv8W6 via email address thing is that Apple is sneaking in VOIP in all their idevices.
With iOS 4.1, Apple will give you the ability to enable FaceTime calls using only e-mail addresses. Presumably, this would be for iPod touch and iPad devices. So, what’s to stop Apple from also enabling audio-only FaceTime calls started by clicking someones e-mail..?
Free Wi-Fi calls to anyone with an iOS device? Sign me up.
iChat allows you to log-in using your MobileMe e-mail account, and I think other addresses as well. What if OS 10.7’s big new feature is iChat w/ FaceTime? Mac to iPhone 4 voice calling? At that point, it would most likely be Mac to iOS calling. Who knows when 10.7 will ship, but by that time I would think iPod touches will have a front facing camera and possibly even iPads.
Let’s go a bit further, if we can enable iChat capabilities via email, what’s to stop Apple from having iChat conversations held in the Message.app? Free Mac to iOS conversations right inside of the app. Hell, free iOS to iOS conversations right in the app.
ATT would be losing a lot of money in texting packages, that’s for sure. I’m not sure that’s the only thing they should be afraid of.
